As part of an hour-long year-in-review report, “Reaching Up, Reaching Out” will spotlight club professionals including Bob Beach of Braintree (Mass.) Municipal GC and Brad Parker of Patriots Point Links.
“Reaching Up, Reaching Out,” a chronicle of PGA Professionals making an impact on the course and in their local communities, will be part of the 2013 PGA of America Year in Review hour-long feature that will debut Monday, December 9, at 10 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on the Golf Channel. The program will be re-aired on December 10 from 2:00-3:00 a.m. ET and 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET to the Golf Channel’s viewership of 84 million domestic households.
The PGA of America is composed of 27,000 men and women professionals who serve as ambassadors to the 26 million Americans who play the game of golf. The “Reaching Up, Reaching Out” segment will feature PGA Professionals Bob Beach, the 2013 Patriot Award recipient and PGA Head Professional at Braintree (Mass.) Municipal Golf Course; and Brad Parker, the PGA General Manager at Patriots Point Links in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Beach was cited for exemplary support of active-duty and disabled veterans, while Parker’s year-round commitment to Special Olympics includes a weekly clinic series and annual fundraiser and tournament.
The segment also focuses on The PGA’s effort to leave a legacy in host communities beyond its Championship Tour visits, highlighting how youth organizations In St. Louis, Mo. benefit from the support of baseball icon Ozzie Smith and the Gateway PGA Foundation and how In Rochester, N.Y., a collaborative effort between the PGA of America Spouses, the PGA Tour Wives Association and Habitat for Humanity culminated in a young family securing a new home.
PGA professionals whose excellence on the course is also highlighted in the year-in-review report include Mark Mielke, Head Professional at Mill River Club in Oyster Bay, N.Y., and Jeff Coston, PGA Teaching Professional at Semiahoo Golf Resort in Blaine, Wash., who shared Low PGA Club Professional honors in the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis; Rod Perry, the PGA Head Pro at Crane Lakes Golf and Country Club in Port Orange, Fla., who followed up his achievements as the 2012 PGA Professional Player of the Year by capturing the 2013 PGA Professional National Championship in June at Sunriver (Ore.) Resort; and Frank Bensel, Assistant Professional at Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., the reigning National Car Rental PGA Assistant Champion.
The program’s second half-hour is devoted to a documentary, “Ryder Cup – One Year to Go,” that follows U.S. Captain Tom Watson and European Captain Paul McGinley’s journey last September to Gleneagles, Scotland, site of the 40th Ryder Cup. The segment features the captains boarding a steam train from Edinburgh to Gleneagles, joining schoolchildren on the PGA Centenary Course, holding a “fireside chat” at Perth Concert Hall, launching the Ryder Cup Educational Resource and conducting a joint news conference.
