Doug Barton recently attempted to auction off the York, Pa., property, but had no takers. He is seeking a buyer to continue operating the golf course, which includes a pro shop, restaurant, banquet center and outdoor pavilion, and notes that it faces no major financial problems.
Doug Barton, the owner of Grandview Golf Club in York, Pa., for the past 10 years, is looking to sell the county’s oldest public golf course. He attempted to auction off the land recently, he said, but there were no takers, the York (Pa.) Dispatch reported.
“I’m trying to sell it to somebody who will continue running it as a golf course,” said Barton, who also works as an electrical contractor.
Chris Borge, who runs the club’s golf shop, said the club will continue operating, and 2016 passes are currently for sale. Barton, who spends very little time at the course nowadays, said the property isn’t currently listed, but it has been in the past. He said he’s still looking for a buyer, but declined to discuss his asking price, the Dispatch reported.
The public course, originally built in 1920, makes most of its money from guests playing, but it does have about 30 regular members, Barton said, which is down slightly from when he first bought the club, the Dispatch reported.
Two other York golf properties recently faced closure. Earlier this year, Regents’ Glen Country Club closed for the foreseeable future and Royal Manchester Golf Links was forced to close its course for a few months to fix its greens, which were severely damaged by a contaminated fungicide, the Dispatch reported.
Barton acknowledged that his club hasn’t been immune to the national trend, but said Grandview has paid all of its taxes and isn’t facing any major financial problems. The club, which includes a pro shop, restaurant, indoor banquet center and outdoor pavilion, will continue operating as normal, and Barton has no immediate need to unload the property, the Dispatch reported.
“It’s not that bad, I’m just ready to move on,” Barton said.
