The Purchase, N.Y. club denied any wrongdoing in the case that revolves around its hiring of a manager who had previously worked for the now-defunct Elmwood Country Club, which was sold to a developer last year.
Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, N.Y. is defending itself in court from allegations by the now-defunct Elmwood Country Club in Greenburgh, N.Y., denying charges that it took customers or employees from Elmwood, according to The Rockland/Westchester Journal News.
Papers filed on June 26 are part of the legal fight that revolves around Iwona Sterk, who left Elmwood, where she had been an Assistant General Manager, to become Old Oaks’ General Manager last year, just before Elmwood closed for good after it was sold for $13 million to a developer, the Journal News reported.
The lawsuit alleges that Sterk was lured by a headhunter to break her contract with Elmwood to be hired by Old Oaks, and that Sterk then brought supplies, customers and even Elmwood employees to her new club.
However, attorneys for Old Oaks maintained that the club had nothing to do with persuading clients to cancel events at Elmwood or switch to Old Oaks, the Journal News reported.
“Old Oaks was not aware of the existence of any events scheduled to take place at Elmwood, and did not take any action through Iwona Sterk, or any other person associated with Old Oaks, to induce any such events to schedule their events at Old Oaks,” attorney Jonathan Sack wrote in a statement obtained by The Journal News. “Plaintiff has suffered no damages as the result of any action of defendant.”
Elmwood filed the lawsuit against the club and Sterk in March 2018 (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2018/04/old-oaks-cc-elmwood-cc-face-off-legal-battle/).
