Some neighborhood residents joined a local TV news crew and other reporters to watch the President finish his round at Mid Pacific Country Club in Kailua on Oahu, Hawaii by just missing a 22-footer and then picking up after a failed backhanded tap-in.
President Obama began the new year on January 1 by allowing pool photographers and others to snap new pictures and video of him on the golf course, USA Today reported.
About two dozen onlookers, including a local television news crew and other reporters, watched at the Mid Pacific Country Club in Kailua on the Hawaiian island of Oahu as Obama hit a fairway shot to within about 22 feet of his final hole of the day.
Portions of the course are visible from a public street, enabling access to the press pool and some nearby residents, USA Today reported.
The President then “two-putted,” drawing oohs from the onlookers as his first putt narrowly missed and rolled about four fee past the hole. Obama then picked up after missing his backhanded “tap in.”
The locals, some of whom snapped photos of the golfing president with smartphones, cheered Obama’s efforts.
After “holing out,” Obama smiled, waved to the crowd, and said, “Happy New Year, everybody!”
When someone shouted, “We love you!” Obama replied: “I love you back.”
