The Hayfield, Minn., club is offering a reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest after $2,000 of damage was caused on holes one, two, four and five. Investigators believe a small compact car or all-terrain vehicle was driven over the greens and got stuck in a sand trap, prompting the perpetrator to rake over the trap and steal two rakes.
Vandals damaged four greens at Oaks Golf Club in Hayfield, Minn., on the morning of July 25, damaging holes one, two, four and five, the Rochester (Minn.)-based KTTC News reported.
The Dodge County Sheriff investigated the scene. The tire tracks left on the greens appear to be from a small compact car with front-wheel drive or a four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle, said superintendent Jeff Wendler.
Upon further investigation, the club concluded that the vehicle apparently got stuck in the sand trap on hole two. There was sand on the green from an apparent attempt by the vehicle to drive out of the trap, Wendler said, and the sand trap was raked over, covering any tracks, and two rakes were missing from the course, KTTC News reported.
The vandalism didn’t stop golfers from coming out to participate in the annual Viking Pride Golf Tournament held the following day, KTTC News reported.
“The greens that got vandalized, there’s some rough spots on them,” said Justin Holtan, an Oaks Golf Club patron and tournament participant. “They’re in pretty bad shape—the rest of them aren’t as bad. So, hopefully they recover quickly.”
Wendler estimates it will cost $2,000 to repair the greens. The club is offering a reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest, KTTC News reported.
