Mill Creek GC is closing for two months to convert to ultradwarf Bermuda greens, after bentgrass introduced in 2010 failed to hold up to the heat.
The Burlington (N.C.) Times-News reports that Mill Creek Golf Club in Mebane, N.C. has closed its course for what is expected to be a two-month period, as bentgrass is replaced with ultradwarf Bermuda on the greens.
“Year in and year out, we’re going to have better surfaces,” said Mike Long, in his first year as General Manager of the club. Long noted that 2010 project, during which the bentgrass was introduced, simply hadn’t worked. “The turf just didn’t perform well in the heat,” he said.
Closing during the summer certainly isn’t ideal, of course, but the club’s 125 members will be able to play at reciprocal clubs, the Times-News reported. And the work will be well worth the upheaval, says Long. “It was a tough decision because there was a lot at stake,” he said. “But Bermuda has gotten so much better, and it’s a much better option.”
Mill Creek could re-open by early to mid-September for members and to the public by the end of September or early October, the Times-News reported.
