The Sussex County Open Championship, offering championships in the men’s, women’s and senior divisions, will be played at the club for the first time this July. “It’s very important to me,” said club President Jeff Bonham. “We were kind of jealous of other clubs in New Jersey that [were giving out] the crown of ‘Best Golfer in the County.’ And not everyone in the county gets to play at the country club, so this is a chance for the public to get out and play [here].”
A maintenance shed fire last week has not deterred the private Newton Country Club in New Jersey’s Andover Township from opening its gates to a host of benefit and championship tournament events this summer, the New Jersey Herald reported.
The greens mowers lost in the fire were replaced by club vendors before noon the next day and the club’s course remained open, the Herald reported.
The club hosted an outing for Sussex County Community College on June 5th, the third straight year the event has been at the club, the Herald reported. Funds raised through the outing benefit the school’s athletic programs.
The big event for the club, though, will be the Sussex County Open Championship on July 14th, the Herald reported. Offering championships in the men’s, women’s and senior divisions, the County Championship will be played at Newton CC for the first time.
“It’s very important to me,” said Jeff Bonham, the club’s President. “We were kind of jealous of other clubs in New Jersey that [were giving out] the crown of “Best Golfer in the County.”
“Not everyone in the county gets to play at the country club, so this is a chance for the public to get out and play [here],” Bonham added. That point, the Herald reported, may illustrate another but unstated reason for the club’s interest in hosting so many local events—if people visit the club and play the course for the first time, they may want to become members.
“One thing that we want everyone to know is that [the championships are] not a Newton Country Club event—[they’re] open to everyone,” Bonham said.
