Golf tour operator hopes to take advantage of proximity to Canadian golfers looking for multi-day mini-vacations.
Golf tour operator New York Golf Trail (NYGT) is preparing to add the Buffalo/Niagara Falls region to its list of destinations, Buffalo Business First reported.
The operators of New York Golf Trail, founded by Rod Christian in 2008 and based in Rochester, N.Y., hope to arrange packages with five area public courses in that region and can add them to its roster of statewide golfing sites. The courses included are in Niagara and Erie counties, but won’t be identified until the deals are signed, Buffalo Business First reported.
The NYGT currently has 25 participating courses in six regions and more than 40 hotels. The trail is popular with Canadians looking for multi-day mini-vacations.
“Given that Canada is our bread-and-butter, it makes sense to include [Buffalo and Niagara Falls],” Christian told Buffalo Business First. “[The area] has so many quality courses, I would think it will be very popular with Canadians and those from elsewhere in [New York] state.”
NYGT’s participating courses currently include Saratoga National Golf Club, Leatherstocking Golf Course near Cooperstown, and Ravenwood Golf Club in the Rochester suburb of Victor. Participating hotels include the Coopers Inn and Otesaga Hotel, both in Cooperstown, and the Inn at Saratoga. Chains like the Holiday Inn and Best Western also participate. A long list of restaurants and bars are also on ithe trail’s recommended list.
Besides the Buffalo/Niagara Falls region, Christian told Buffalo Business First that he also hopes to put together deals in the Chautauqua area, the southern part of the Finger Lakes region, and in the Catskills Mountain region.
The New York Golf Trail is now sanctioned by I Love New York, the state’s official tourism promotion agency, it was noted. “It was more popular than I realized,” Christian said. “I don’t think people know just how many quality courses there are around the state.”
