Two Swedish entrepreneurs have bought the Jensen Beach, Fla. club and will work with Tommy Fazio as “a lot of money” is put into course renovations. With close ties to Scandinavian players and the European Tour, the owners see opportunities to attract at least 3,000 international visitors annually through special packages. Hiring will soon begin for pros to give golf lessons and for other new golf course and restaurant employees.
Two Swedish golf entrepreneurs who have bought Eagle Marsh Golf Club in Jensen Beach, Fla. are making major changes that they say will create jobs and increase tourism for Martin County, TCPalm.com reported
Johan Tumba and Joakim Sabel said they fell in love with Eagle Marsh’s raw, natural beauty and believed it could be turned into a course that would attract thousands of golf fanatics from all over the world, Tumba told TCPalm.com.
“It’s an absolutely beautiful place that we think just needs some tender loving care,” he said. “We heard so much about the history and loved everything about it, and we decided that we could make this golf course great again.”
The purchase agreement was private, and Tumba declined to disclose the purchase price. But the two are “putting a lot of money” into the renovations, he told TCPalm.com.
Some of the projects that are being planned include killing weeds, cleaning out lakes, re-coating the asphalt parking lot and updating the Eagle’s Nest restaurant, Tumba said. The new owners are also planning to work with the golf course’s original designer, Tommy Fazio, to modernize it, TCPalm.com reported.
With close ties to Scandinavian players and the European Tour, the duo is confident the renovated golf course will attract at least 3,000 visitors each year, Tumba said.
“The golfers in Sweden travel a lot during the wintertime, at least once or twice a year,” he told TCPalm.com. “Nobody really offered great packages for Scandinavians to come to Florida, so when they come over here, they don’t really know where to play.”
Tumba and Sabel have been coordinating with local hotels and other courses to create a golf package for international players, Tumba said. “We want to make it a total experience for people that come here from all over the world,” he said.
The new owners plan to hire six new golf course employees, 10 restaurant employees and five unaffiliated professionals for independent golf lessons, TCPalm.com reported.
Eagle Marsh will remain open to golfers during the renovations, and Tumba said he expects the course to be finished around Christmas, TCPalm.com reported.
