Derek Maksy, who also owns the Lakeville (Mass.) Country Club, could finalize the sale of the Dartmouth, Mass., property by next month. The club closed December 31, and Maksy is working on updating the golf course, with an opening scheduled for October or November, while the banquet facility will likely reopen in 2017.
Former Lakeville Selectman Derek A. Maksy and his wife are planning to buy the Hawthorne Country Club in Dartmouth, Mass., and could finalize the sale next month, the Fall River, Mass., Herald News reported.
Maksy, who is purchasing the property from Dartmouth businessman Kevin Santos, said he could close on the golf course by the middle of August. He would not disclose the purchase price, the Herald News reported.
The deal includes the banquet facilities, golf course, restaurant and all the kitchen equipment at the club, Maksy said. The club closed December 31. A news release issued at the time of the closing said it has “proved not to be economically viable” and the decision to close it was because of a “significant decline in golf interest and participation,” the Herald News reported.
Santos has allowed Maksy, who also owns the Lakeville Country Club along with his wife, Madelyn Maksy, to work on the Hawthorne Country Club before the completion of the sale, according to Maksy. Maksy said the grass is being mowed and he has crews working on the greens and the tee boxes, the Herald News reported.
“They’re all burnt up and the water has been shut off all summer,” Maksy said, describing the greens.
He would like to have the course open by late October or early November and it would probably remain open all year long, Maksy said. He plans to proceed “a little slower” with the banquet facility, but hopes to be taking reservations for 2017 functions by the first week of September. “We’re not going to jump on that right away,” he said.
Maksy said he hopes to open the restaurant by October, the Herald News reported.
The Dartmouth select board approved the transfer of the club’s liquor license at Monday night’s meeting, according to Town Administrator David Cressman. The transfer is subject to the approval of the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
The name of the corporation for the country club is the Hawthorne Golf Club Inc., but Maksy said the business will retain its traditional name of the Hawthorne Country Club, the Herald News reported.
