Officials from nine labor unions representing workers at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs, W.Va. have approved a new contract by a vote of 465 to 140, The vote, which ended more than a year of talks, opens the door for a proposal from Marriott International Inc. to purchase the resort (see “Greenbrier Resort Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy; Deal for Sale to Marriott Announced,” C&RB, April 2009, pg. 10). The Greenbrier is set to go on the auction block June 12.
According to the Associated Press, CSX Corp., which currently owns the resort, made a final offer to the unions on Thursday, April 30. In a statement released from The Greenbrier the next day, spokesperson Lynn Swann said: “The Greenbrier is pleased that all collective bargaining agreements were ratified by our employees. We are grateful to our employees and the unions that represent them.
“These agreements must now be approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court before they can become effective,” Swann added.”The ratification of these agreements is a key component to the sale of the resort.”
