This August, Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, N.H. will unveil extensive restorations to the Mount Washington Course as part of a $7 million renovation of the property’s golf facilities. Golf course architect Brian Silva is leading the team in executing a thorough restoration of the course, based upon the original 1915 design of legendary golf course designer Donald Ross.
Additionally, Silva has taken steps to ensure the Mount Washington Course is environmentally friendly. Silva’s golf philosophy includes using the land to its best advantage and making sure the creation of a golf hole or bunker is naturally adapted to it, allowing the least amount of negative impact on the land and environment. In addition, Silva chose fescue grass for fairway and rough grass areas. Fescue grass has proven the most adaptable to the setting and also minimizes irrigation and fertilizer use, conserving energy and promoting eco-friendly maintenance.
The renovated golf course is just one of the significant enhancements taking place at Mount Washington Resort, as part of an overall $50 million renovation project. A new full-service, 25,000 sq.-ft. spa will debut in the winter of 2008-09, along with expanded meeting and event space. A $2 million restoration of The Hotel’s Veranda, Great Hall and Dining Room was completed in May 2007, and plans for the proposed development of approximately 1,000 new homes and homesites over the next decade are also underway.
