Intruders bypassed a locked gate and entered the grounds of the Versailles, Ky. property by driving off the side of the road in what appeared to be a four-wheel-drive or utility vehicle. Deep tire tracks were gouged into a green, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage from what the club’s owner saw as a deliberate action.
A nightmare became reality for management at Moss Hill Golf Course in Versailles, Ky., after vandals left tire tracks on the course over the weekend of July 14-15.
According to WTVQ TV, the club’s management discovered deep tire tracks on the green of the course’s 10th hole after opening on Saturday morning, July 14. Versailles police believe the damage was caused either the previous night or early on the morning of the 14th, WTVQ reported.
The station reported that it appeared that the driver bypassed a locked gate and entered the golf course by driving off the side of the road.
Moss Hill’s owner, Tom Bozarth, told WTVQ that the path taken by the vandals once they were only the property seemed deliberate to him.
“They specifically came to the green on hole No. 10, drove across it, deliberately tore it up, and quickly left,” Bozarth said.
The damage appeared to be from either an ATV-four-wheel-drive vehicle, or a utility vehicle like a John Deere Gator or Kubota, Bozarth added.
The damage caused was estimated at about $5,000, WTVQ reported, and the course is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Moss Hill was founded in 1967 and has a par-71, 18-hole golf course, along with a driving range, pro shop and Watkin’s Tavern, a full-service restaurant and bar.
The club posted this message on its Facebook page about the incident: “Unfortunately, we have people who have no respect for others’ property. We have worked hard to have a very nice golf course. It is very disheartening that this would happen in such a great community.”
