The nearly 100-year-old William Land Golf Course was threatened with closing when The First Tee of Sacramento announced it was ending its lease, but the city has reached an agreement with Morton Golf, which operates three other city courses, to take over its operation. Details of the agreement will be heard by City Council on June 19.
As C&RB reported in May (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2018/05/first-tee-seeks-end-operation-historic-sacramento-course/), the William Land Golf Course, a public golf mainstay in Sacramento, Calif. for nearly 100 years, was in danger of closing when The First Tee of Sacramento announced that it was cancelling its lease of the course as of the end of June.
The Sacramento Bee has now reported, however, that the city is working to finalize a deal with Morton Golf to take over the running of the course and keep the local landmark open to the public. Morton Golf already runs three other city courses: Haggin Oaks, Bing Maloney and Bartley Cavanaugh.
“City staff and officials have been working on solutions to continue operations,” the city said in a statement. “And a partnership with Morton Golf will allow for a seamless transition.”
Added Mayor Darrell Steinberg on Twitter: “Looks like we will be able to keep the people’s golf course open!”
By keeping the course open, the city said it would preserve 22 part-time and three existing full-time jobs, with the ability to add three or four more full-time employees.
The City Council will hear the details of the agreement on June 19, The Bee reported.
First Tee had written in a letter to the city that it expected to lose $150,000 this year at the course, continuing a five-year trend of heavy losses brought on by a decline in golfers and revenue.
