When Alex “Nipper” Campbell, a local golf pro, had designed the course at Moraine Country Club he created a links-type course like those he saw in his native Scotland. Trees were not a part of the formula.
Eventually, however, the Moraine course became like many others with mature trees lining its fairways and framing its greens. Partly because of the expense of maintaining the unused areas between fairways, they were left to the whims of nature and became so thick with foliage.
That all changed in the fall of 2006 with the hiring of Jason Mahl as golf course superintendent who, with a keen appreciation for the architect’s design and the help of a conscientious crew of six, worked hard through the winters to clear brush and remove unwanted trees restoring some of Moraine’s original links character.
The makeover of Moraine still is a work in progress, but the course is ready for the 144 golfers who will participate in the Ohio Amateur Championship that begins Tuesday, July 14.
“Nipper Campbell designed a links-type golf course,” said Hugh Wall, chairman of Moraine’s green committee to the Daily Dayton News. “We have been able to convince the board that we should respect the design and return it to the golf course as soon as possible.”
