Mizner CC’s New Fitness Center Offers Interactive Wellness Experience

By Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief, Club + Resort Business | January 22, 2020

Delray Beach, Fla. club’s Fitness Center—aptly named CENTRAL—is part of the club’s recent $22 million expansion. Technogym equipment gives members an interactive wellness experience by using technology to personalize their training. Each piece of equipment connects to a user’s mobile device so individuals can keep track of their personal fitness, goals, training data and programs while gauging their progress on any piece of equipment.

Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. recently opened the doors to its new multimillion-dollar Fitness Center. A vital part of the club’s recent $22 million expansion—aptly named CENTRAL—Mizner’s Fitness Center represents the first private club on the east coast of Florida to be equipped as a “Total Technogym Fitness Center.” Technogym is the official supplier to six Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“It was our intent from the beginning to create the crown jewel in fitness for our community,” Paul Raymond, Mizner’s Director of Fitness, Spa and Aquatics, said. “We wanted to strive to be the best of the best in total fitness. And now Mizner Country Club is one of Technogym’s flagship country club facilities in the United States. Their state-of-the-art equipment gives our members an interactive wellness experience by using technology to personalize their training. Each piece of equipment connects to a user’s mobile device so each individual can keep track of their personal fitness, goals, training data and programs while gauging their progress on any piece of equipment. Members can also access their information and training programs on any Technogym machine, from anywhere, and from any personal device—mobile, tablet, smart TV, PC, or each individual’s ‘mywellness key.’”

Raymond added that there is a mywellness cloud that identifies members from an app on their phone, as they enter the Fitness Center. It can record their physical moves, calories burned, miles traveled on the fitness equipment and more. “It’s data personified and interactive,” he said. And, a daily leaderboard records each individual’s workout versus others.

There is also a backend of the mywellness software designed for the Mizner Fitness team, which enables them to tailor workouts, track progress and do an analysis of a member’s physical progress at any point in time.

Mizner’s Fitness Center encompasses 6,000 sq. ft. and houses more than 50 pieces of equipment. The Group Aerobics Studio is another 1,017 sq. ft. The 532-sq.-ft. Pilates Studio, the 725-sq.-ft. Group Cycle Studio and the two Massage and Tranquility Quiet Rooms round out the overall Fitness Center complex.

“Our mission from the outset was to design more than just an aesthetically pleasing space. We envisioned a lifestyle center with amenities built to fit the way our members want to live in today’s technological and environmental universe; that flexes and adapts to fit our families’ individual wants and needs to help them maintain a healthier lifestyle,” said Mizner General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Larry Savvides. “We achieved this by providing the best possible fitness equipment, services, programs and professional staff. And, we use technology to connect so that our members can experience their daily wellness profile. We’re weaving technology into fitness through a complete range of equipment for cardio training, strength training, weight loss, functional training as well as group activities.”

Since its September opening, the Mizner Fitness Center has seen upwards of 30 percent more participation in the gym area alone. “We are seeing people we have never seen before. People who were taking yoga, Pilates, and group cycle classes elsewhere are now participating in our programs,” said Raymond. In fact, Mizner’s Group Cycle Studio, which offers 10 classes a week, is sold out. Similarly, the 15 classes a week of Pilates Reformer are also sold out.

The Fitness Center’s staff has also grown. They now have six personal trainers, eight Pilates instructors, six Group Cycle instructors, eight massage therapists and a new MMA/kickboxing instructor. This is in addition to a fully staffed aquatics team that services the club’s new Aquatic Center.

Savvides notes that Mizner’s fitness programs don’t end with physical alone.

“We have tied in with culinary to provide ‘The Market,’ our newly designed café, with a healthy menu featuring fresh juices, smoothies, salad bowls, and healthy sandwiches,” Savvides said. “And, we will be incorporating more healthy dishes as our members request them.”

What’s next on the Mizner fitness agenda? Beginning next year, the club will be offering lectures by recognized individuals in various health fields – heart, colon, neuromuscular. The club also is planning a complete teen program including Pilates and Boot Camp.

CENTRAL’s expansion added 41,000 sq. ft. to the club and is the culmination of more than four years of planning and construction, Savvides said.

“We’ve carefully considered every aspect of what our members were asking for in their community setting—both their needs and desires,” he said. “The result is the creation of a gateway to an unforgettable lifestyle making wellness accessible to everyone.”
