The latest golf hybrid incorporates a stick that’s part lacrosse stick and part golf club, but does not require additional holes, tees or other updates to an existing golf course.
From disc golf to FootGolf, golf courses are looking at variations on the sport to get people to use golf courses for things outside of traditional golf. Newly invented “FlingGolf” is the latest innovation, and it’s making its way onto Minnesota golf courses, the Minneapolis/St. Paul-based KSTP 5 ABC News reported.
Using a stick that’s part lacrosse stick and part golf club and a swing taken right from lacrosse, FlingGolf allows players to play right alongside traditional golfers using the same tees and same greens, KSTP reported.
This season, Brookview Golf Course in Golden Valley, Minn., purchased FlingGolf sticks to rent out to anyone who wants to give it a try, KSTP reported.
“Our head golf pro brought this to our attention last year,” Brookview assistant manager Kim Straw said. “We looked at it, looked at their website, got an idea what it was and then just decided—we’re always looking for new opportunities —so we thought we would offer it at the course this year.”
With average rounds down across the sport of golf, many facilities are looking for ways to get people to golf courses for things other than the traditional game, KSTP reported.
“We’re always looking for ways to get the non golfer to come to the golf course,” Straw said. “With the addition of lawn bowling, added selections in our grill area, we’re really opening it up to a lot of different and new people that we weren’t seeing at the golf course before.
“Everybody seems interested in it and wants to try it, that’s for sure,” Straw continued. “I think it’s more toward a little bit younger crowd. We think we’ll get the younger kids who maybe don’t really like golf—maybe it’s a little difficult for them. FlingGolf is gonna be a lot easier to pick up on.”
From a course management standpoint, FlingGolf doesn’t require additional holes, tees or targets, which is one drawback to some of the other golf alternatives, KSTP reported.
“You can play right along with the regular golfer,” Straw said. “If you don’t like golf or haven’t picked up on the game of golf you can still come out, enjoy the golf course and play right along with a golfer.”
Players can purchase their own FlingGolf stick, or rent one for a small fee (Brookview charges $2 to rent), on top of greens fees at three courses in the Twin Cities metro: Brookview, Pebble Creek in Becker and Centerbrook in Brooklyn Center, KSTP reported.
