Tommy Janney, former Executive Director of Clubhouse Operations of The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Va., passed away on July 23 following a long illness.
Janney spent the sum of his private club career at The Country Club of Virginia, beginning in 1993 as the Manager of the Westhampton Grill. In 1994 he moved to the James River as Clubhouse Manager, where he became an integral part of its overall operation. During the construction of the new James River Clubhouse in 2000-2001, Janney served as the Project Manager, and it was not unusual to see him atop a bulldozer or personally inspecting the installation of an element of the new building.
In 2005, Janney was promoted to Director of Clubhouse Operations and returned to the Westhampton Clubhouse to oversee clubhouse activities for both locations. He was named Executive Director of Clubhouse Operations in 2012 and remained in that role until May 2016, when his illness prevented him from returning to work. Janney had a keen eye for talent and a passion for finding opportunities within the club for staff members to grow and prosper. Janney often said that it was the mentorship of his retired General Manager, Skip Harris, that gave him the self-confidence to embrace new challenges and to encourage that confidence in others.
Janney shared the same commitment to the private club industry. He was an active member of the Virginias Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA), serving in many leadership roles. He was Chapter President in 2011 and remained dedicated to the development of aspiring club managers throughout his tenure with CMAA. Janney had an abiding appetite for continuing education, attending countless professional conferences and seminars, and eventually earning his mini MBA from the University of Richmond. He was respected by his industry peers and colleagues for his achievements and dedication to his profession.
A celebration of Janney’s life was held July 25 at Bliley’s Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m., and a post-service reception at the James River Clubhouse beginning at 12:30 p.m.
