Following the new PGA Tour regulations, spectators can now carry phones kept on silent mode; use of a new iPhone app is also encouraged to track scoring and get a course overview.
Officials of the 2011 Memorial Tournament, being held this week (May 30-June 5) at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, have updated course rules to allow spectators to carry cell phones, as long as the devices are kept on silent mode, reports USA Today.
The golf tournament at Muirfield Village is following new PGA Tour regulations in making the change. Tournament Director Dan Sullivan told the Columbus Dispatch that allowing fans to stay connected in this fashion is a good thing.
The Memorial is also encouraging spectators to download its own iPhone app that features real-time scoring and an overview of the course.
Rules still prohibit fans from taking pictures or videos of players in action, and phone calls are restricted to designated areas.
An announcement on the tournament’s website said: “All phones and mobile devices will be permitted on the property for 2011 in accordance with new PGA TOUR regulations announced in February. The use of cell phones and mobile devices during the Memorial Tournament is restricted to designated areas and not allowed on the playing field (tees, fairways and greens), practice areas or players’ scoring area. Patrons must keep cell phones in the ‘silent’ mode at all times. Photo and video use of all mobile devices is prohibited beginning Thursday and capturing video is not permitted at any time. Violators will have their phones confiscated; they can be retrieved at the close of play at Lost and Found within the clubhouse.”
