The recently sold Locust Grove, Va. property features “the longest hole in the U.S.” (an 841-yard par 6) and a par 3 shaped like a baseball diamond.
Meadows Farms Golf Course, a daily-fee property in Locust Grove, Va., announced that it has selected Billy Casper Golf (BCG) to manage the club’s 27-hole, championship layout.
After being put up for sale at the beginning of this year (http://clubandresortbusiness.com/?s=Locust+Grove) by its original owner, Bill “Farmer” Meadows, the owner of Meadows Farms Nurseries, the sale of Meadows Farms GC to Ken Dotson, owner of a construction and real estate company, was completed recently in a transaction brokered by the National Golf & Resort Properties Group of Marcus & Millichap.
Meadows Farms GC is located 60 minutes from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Va., 45 minutes from Charlottesville, Va. and 15 minutes from Fredericksburg, Va. The club’s Bill Ward Jr.-design course opened in 1993 and is spread over 268 acres of cattle farmland.
In addition to the natural lay of the land, the course’s setting is enhanced by seasonal flora, rock and railroad-tie walls in and around greens and bunkers, and seven water crossings. The course layout is designed to gives golfers many options to play each hole, no matter their skill level. The three, nine-hole layouts feature highly individualized holes which “leave golfers with the feeling of playing 27 different courses, rather than playing the same hole 27 times,” according to course operators.
The innovative designs that are part of the course layout include a baseball diamond-shaped par 3, an 841-yard par 6 recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as “the longest hole in the United States,” and an island green hole.
The intimidating but fun No. 4 hole on the “Waterfall Nine” is set in front of a hospital that was used for both sides during the Civil War. On the way up to the green, golfers drive their carts through an old-looking, stone structure with water cascading over it, making for “the coolest waterfall most have ever seen,” according to course operators.
In addition to an expansive putting green and grass-tee driving range, Meadows Farms GC also features an inviting clubhouse, fully-stocked pro shop and the Red Bull Grill that offers “an elaborate menu and stunning views [and] is a popular setting for corporate and social outings,” according to course operators.
“Meadows Farms is an important component of the recreation and economic stature of the Locust Grove community, so we felt it important that ownership be local,” said Dotson.
“Billy Casper Golf is also relatively local, came highly recommended, and its commitment to personalized operations are impressive,” Dotson added in announcing the selection of BCG for turnkey operation of all facets of the operation, including course and property maintenance, staffing and training, clubhouse activities, merchandising, golf instruction, marketing and public relations, special events and financial management.
“Billy Casper Golf is proud to manage Meadows Farms Golf Course,” said Peter Hill, BCG’s Chairman and CEO. “The uniqueness of the layout gives golfers great thrills, and Billy Casper Golf is primed to further popularize the experience as a fun and unforgettable ‘must play’ to a wider audience.”
