Plans are underway in Lake Charles, La. to build the new course on a 160-acre plot of land donated by Morgan Field Development. Chennault (La.) International Airport recently purchased Mallard Cove GC to expand the airport, but will not be able to take over the property until construction of the new course is completed.
The Mallard Cove Golf Club in Lake Charles, La. has been causing functionality problems at the Chennault International Airport, reported KPLC-TV.
“Because of where the golf course is currently located, we’re unable to use one of our taxiways and put airplanes out there,” said Chennault International Airport Executive Director Kevin Melton.
That’s one of the factors that’s led the airport to buy the property that currently contains the golf course. Mallard Cove is right in the middle of the much-needed area for the runways, but soon the course will be taken over, reported KPLC.
As for residents concerned about missing out on playing 18 holes due to construction, the mayor’s office says Chennault won’t be able to take over Mallard Cove until the building of the new course is finished, reported KPLC.
The mayor’s office says the land for the new golf course is 160 acres, and it was donated by Morgan Field Development, a property management company, reported KPLC.
“It’s a success story for the community,” said Melton. “It’s the fact that we’re going to be able to come in here and grow and at the same time, the city is going to get a new golf course out of it.”
In December 2017, C&RB reported that the new course and clubhouse could be in the works if a deal between the city and the airport could be reached.
