The Bamberg, S.C., golf course closed December 31, 2016, and the buyers are focusing on gathering support and raising funds to renovate the greens and clubhouse. Volunteers have been working on getting the club into shape.
Paw Paw Country Club in Bamberg, S.C., has been sold, but those involved are not yet ready to release the details, the Orangeburg, S.C., Times and Democrat reported.
A group of buyers has purchased the dormant golf course, which closed December 31, 2016, according to member Marion Hiers. More information on the sale will be released soon, Hiers said, but for now, he is focusing on the revitalization of the course, which he is supervising, the Times and Democrat reported.
“There is a group of people that is trying to revitalize this course and buy it from the original owner, which has transpired,” Hiers said. “We are trying to gather support to get enough funds up so we can renovate the greens, clubhouse, everything associated with it. I just live here in Bamberg and play golf, and it’s too nice of a facility not to have this in the community.”
Volunteers had already been helping to get the club in shape, but Husqvarna’s lawnmower testing division was recently recruited to cut the grass and help move the golf course back toward a good playing condition, the Times and Democrat reported.
“I contacted Husqvarna about their mowing program, and they have come over here…trying to help us get this overgrown course back in shape, so we can start renovating it and revitalizing it,” Hiers said.
The next step will be focusing on increasing the club’s membership. “A number of courses in the area have gone out of business, so we ought to have the opportunity to pull some of those members in here if we can get everything done that we have on the plans,” Hiers said.
“We think we’ve got a great opportunity and we’re trying to get the whole community involved,” Hiers said.
