Jose Pastrello On Why Padel Is the Next Strategic Move

The Director of Courts at Quail Creek CC explains why padel is the right next move as racquet sports programs mature.

By Jose Pastrello, Director of Court Sports, Quail Creek Country Club | February 9, 2026

There is no question that racquet sports are thriving in the United States, and Southwest Florida (SWFL) has been at the center of this momentum. Tennis has long been a core offering in clubs, grounded in tradition and prestige. But over the past decade, pickleball has transformed the landscape entirely, especially here in SWFL, where it has already matured into a fully developed, highly competitive, and deeply social community.

Pickleball is no longer the “new” attraction. It is an essential pillar of club culture. Courts are full, programs are robust, and players span every demographic. But with maturity comes a challenge: what comes next? If clubs want to keep racquets participation growing rather than plateauing, they must continue to innovate. Members who embraced the fast rise of pickleball are already seeking the next engaging activity: something fresh, dynamic, and exciting.

That is where padel comes into play.

A Changing Landscape for Country Clubs

For generations, tennis was the anchor of country club racquet programs (elegant, competitive, and deeply connected to the lifestyle of private clubs). Pickleball then burst onto the scene with a completely different energy: loud, social, inclusive, and immediately fun. It disrupted old expectations and created new ones.

But now those expectations have evolved. Members want more variety, more opportunities to engage, and more reasons to stay active within the club. In SWFL, especially, racquet sports enthusiasts have become sophisticated consumers of sport. They know what they like, they seek community-driven activities, and they crave continual growth.

Tennis and pickleball together form two ends of a spectrum:

  • Tennis: technical, traditional, time-intensive
  • Pickleball: accessible, social, instantly engaging

The market has matured to a point where clubs need a third option, one that brings the best of both worlds.

Padel: The Logical Next Step

Padel is the bridge between tennis and pickleball that clubs have been waiting for.

Although it has existed since 1969 and flourished throughout Europe and Latin America, padel is now entering the U.S. with unprecedented momentum. And it fits perfectly into the demands of today’s country club environment.

Padel offers:

  • More athleticism and strategic depth than pickleball
  • Greater accessibility and shorter learning curves than tennis
  • A social, high-energy format ideal for community engagement

Its court design, with glass walls, vibrant turf, and a sleek, modern aesthetic, not only elevates the look of a club but also naturally attracts curiosity and participation.

With more than 30 million players worldwide, padel isn’t just a trend. It’s a proven global sport whose U.S. expansion is only beginning. And clubs that move early will be positioned as leaders rather than followers.

Innovation Requires the Right Team

But adopting padel is more than installing courts, it requires a staff mindset that matches the sport itself.

To bring padel to life, clubs need:

  • Professionals eager for new challenges
  • Teams that embrace innovation rather than fear it
  • A culture comfortablewith  experimenting, making mistakes, and learning
  • Leaders with a vision for the long-term evolution of racquet sports

Pickleball succeeded because early adopters were bold. Padel will succeed for the same reason.

Leading the Way at Quail Creek

I am fortunate to work for a club that understands this moment. At Quail Creek Country Club (Naples, Fla.), we recognize that racquet sports in SWFL have reached a new level of maturity and that our members deserve continued innovation. By adding three new padel courts, we are investing not just in a facility, but in the future of our racquets community.

This decision reflects who we are: forward-thinking, member-focused, and unafraid to evolve. It is a commitment to delivering a complete racquets ecosystem that meets the expectations of today while anticipating the desires of tomorrow.
