Irondequoit Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y., will turn 100 on May 16 and is celebrating with member events throughout the year and two centennial junior membership scholarships, through which a deserving young man and young lady will each receive an annual golf membership package. Details can be found at www.irondequoitcc.org.
Irondequoit’s founding members were of Jewish faith, and were denied membership at any of the other clubs. In response, the twelve founding members who were all leaders of industry, commissioned Donald Ross to design and build a 3,200-yard, nine-hole golf course. In 1952 the back nine completed Donald Ross’s original design on land purchased from neighboring Oak Hill Country Club. The original Herbert Stern designed clubhouse was destroyed by a fire in 1929, and replaced by an art deco structure which has since been renovated three times. The most recent undertaking in 2009 included an extensive remodel of both interior and exterior spaces as well as a pool area with dramatic views of the course.
“This really is a special place,” said General Manager Mark Miller. “Members will tell you when they drive down the driveway along the rolling hills of the 9th hole that their blood pressure immediately drops, and the stresses of everyday life are replaced with a sense of serenity. They belong here to unwind and to be with family and friends.”
Today, Irondequoit prides itself on its progressive policies, particularly the unrestricted golf course access afforded to female members. In addition to the 18-hole golf course, outdoor amenities include a driving range and short game practice complex, a lighted putting green, 4 tennis courts, 2 paddle courts, and a lap swimming pool with a diving well. A skating rink is maintained during the winter months and members enjoy a fire pit to gather around and socialize. Indoor amenities include a golf learning studio with Trackman and video swing analysis, flexible meeting space, a contemporary Bar & Grill offering casual and fine dining, a fitness center, and wireless access throughout.
Irondequoit continues to grow with over 140 new family memberships in the last five years. Long-range planning for improvements to the golf course and physical plant are ongoing. The club currently has design plans for a larger fitness center with golf simulators for practice and play during the winter months.
