Concert Golf: How long have you been with Glen Oaks Country Club?
Chris Coen: This month marks a milestone event for me—I just turned 60! It’s hard to believe that I’ve spent half of my life working here, having joined the team at the age of 30. I started as an assistant superintendent in 1993, when the golf course was still under construction. A year later, we opened the links, and I’ve been here ever since.
Concert: Tell us about your experience working with Concert Golf Partners.
Coen: At first, many of us were uneasy because we were unsure what to expect, but I’ve found them to be nothing but supportive of our endeavors. It became clear early on that they weren’t going to micromanage me and that they’d be supportive of my initiatives.
Concert: How did the recapitalization affect operations?
Coen: We are now working with a group that is well-educated and aware of my daily practices. They are cognizant of the factors that can impact the course, and they do what is needed to protect the investment.
Initially, I was concerned that budgets would be cut and that we wouldn’t be able to provide the conditions that members had come to expect, but Concert allowed us to maintain our operation. They’ve continued to invest in our operating budget and even some essential capital projects.
Concert: What sets your course apart?
Coen: The key to our success is great people. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside Kurt Hudson, Chris Horton and Bryce Eichmeier for many years, and their commitment has been crucial. These core team members, along with strong, experienced seasonal staff, have helped to make a big difference.
The contributions of our fellow team members at the clubhouse, including General Manager Jeff Schauer and Director of Golf Don Tracy ensure our projects are fruitful. Furthermore, our esteemed membership takes great pride in the club and this recognition is a testament to the care they have for the property.
