Expected to be complete by September 1, the project includes new construction of tee boxes, asphalt cart paths, concrete curbs, a practice putting green, and synthetic putting range tee, as well as drainage improvements and irrigation replacement.
Facing substantial improvements at the nine-hole blue course, followed by the red and white courses, the Nas Jacksonville (Fla.) Golf Club is undergoing renovations projected to be completed by September 1, the Jacksonville-based Florida Times-Union reported.
“The project includes enlargement and new construction of some tee boxes, asphalt cart paths and concrete curbs, bunker reconstruction with drainage, drainage improvements, irrigation replacement, new practice putting green, new synthetic putting range tee and conversion of a gravel cart path by the driving range to a concrete cart path,” said Project Manager Ensign Gregory Smith from Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast Public Works Department.
Costing a grand total of $2.2 million, the project is being renovated by experienced contractors from Waldsworth Golf Construction Company, the Times-Union reported.
“There are five to 10 workers on sight every day removing asphalt from the cart paths, removing sod, or working on the drainage structures around the facility,” said Smith.
According to Smith, the Project is a Morale Welfare & Recreation (MWR) funded project. The main goal is to provide service members and their families facilities and activities that they can enjoy in order to improve morale, the Times-Union reported.
“The golf course is the largest MWR facility on base that is used by active, reserve and retired military and their families,” said Smith. “The course was in need of drainage repair and updating in order to make the full course usable at all times. The improvements to the course are also making the course more challenging with alteration of several holes.”
Smith explained that the outdoor project can easily be impeded by rain and storms, hence a challenge they could encounter. “The rain should not slow the project down because the contractors take historic rainfall data into account when building their schedule, so they have accounted for rain days,” he said.
One highlight of the project is updating the drainage system, NAS Jax Community Planning and Liaison Officer Matt Schellhorn said. “Also, I know they are redoing the cart paths and some of the tee boxes. It will visually make the golf course more appealing,” Schellhorn said.
“The project is going really well,” said Smith. “It’s a cool project to be able to work on a golf course. Something you don’t to do too often. When the project is completed, it will provide a much better useable facility for the base.”
