A diver maintaining the Margate, Fla., club’s irrigation system on July 8 discovered a clay pot in 10-15 feet of water containing the remains of a human skull and various trinkets. Investigators believe the pot was part of a religious ritual, but the race, sex or age of the skull have not yet been verified.
Police are investigating the discovery of a human skull at the Oriole Golf and Tennis Club in Margate, Fla., the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale WSVN-TV 7 News reported.
A diver maintaining the irrigation system at the golf course found a vase with a human skull inside at around 10 a.m. on July 8, Margate Police said.
“The divers were performing maintenance on an irrigation line when they came across a clay pot in approximately 10-15 feet of water,” Margate Police said in a statement. “The clay pot contained the remains of a human skull and various trinkets.”
Clayton Merritt discovered the pot and said the skull looked like a child’s head, News reported.
“It had some teeth in there, and it looked like it was a child’s head. That’s for sure because there were two teeth missing, and you can see where the adult teeth were growing,” said Merritt.
Investigators believe the pot was part of a religious ritual. When Merritt poured out the vase, he said there were little toys and other things inside, News reported.
“It had like knickknacks and stuff in it, a key, a metal lady, a form of a face,” said Merritt.
Police have not verified the race, sex or age of the skull but noted it was taken to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, News reported.
“The investigation will lead to DNA, dental records, the identity of that skull, but right now everything is unknown,” said Margate Police Lt. Andy Zettek.
