After 87 years of operation, the Holland (Mich.) Country Club is closing.
The reason, according to an article in The Grand Rapids Press, was simply that the club, with its 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, fitness facilities and restaurant, could not find enough members to keep it going.
According to The Press, the club saw a 30 percent decline in memberships in recent years, losing 80 members over the past year. At last count, the club had about 220 golf and social members.
Established in 1921, the course was sold to American Legion Post No. 6 in 1945. The legion leased clubhouse space in 1968 to The Holland Tavern Club, which 11 years later purchased the property and renamed it the Holland Country Club.
In 2007, club members voted down a merger with the Macatawa Legends Golf & Country Club, of Holland Township. Then in February, members voted against raising dues and assessments to pay down the mortgage and $200,000 in debt from previous year. About 40 employees were then laid off, and the dining facility closed in January for maintenance.
According to The Press, the club’s leadership had explored going semi-private, but the club’s liquor license prevented that. The club’s property, including equipment, will be sold at auction later this month.
