The 88-year-old Phiilipsburg, N.J. property will go out for bids July 11. It was acquired by the owners of nearby Apple Mountain G&CC in 2010 and features a golf course designed by Robert White, the first President of the PGA of America.
Harkers Hollow Golf & Country Club, a 177-acre property in Phillipsburg, N.J., that first opened in 1929, will go out for bids on July 11, LehighValleyLive.com reported, according to a news release issued on June 14 by Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Company.
“It’s not every day that an operating country club comes on the market,” head auctioneer Bob Dann said when issuing the announcement, LehighValleyLive.com reported. Property previews were scheduled for June 15 and 22.
The country club, located near the Warren County (N.J.) fairgrounds, closed for a few months late in 2009 but reopened the following year after it was acquired by the owners of Apple Mountain Golf and Country Club, which is about eight miles away, LehighValleyLive.com reported.
The club’s golf course was designed by Robert White, the first President of the PGA of America. Reviews on various websites describe it as moderately challenging due to rolling hills along the Lopatcong Creek, but give poor marks for maintenance, LehighValleyLive.com reported.
The country club portion of the property includes a banquet hall, pub and restaurant, the auction house said. A liquor license is also part of the sale.
C&RB reported in 2014 on upgrades made to the club’s food-and-beverage operation under its new ownership: http://clubandresortbusiness.com/2014/04/restaurant-debuts-harkers-hollow-gcc/
If the prospective buyer isn’t interested in maintaining Harkers Hollow as a club or course, LehighValleyLive.com reported, the clubhouse and other buildings can be subdivided and repurposed, and the land sold off or used for agriculture, according to the auction house’s fnews release.
