Former Parks and Recreation Commission Director Yvette Yeager pleaded guilty to embezzling $85,155 from the golf course last year, and the property is using the partial restitution to upgrade the sprinkler system and add a restroom.
The Greenville (Miss.) Municipal Golf Course is about to be the beneficiary from a partial restitution of funds embezzled by former Parks and Recreation Commission director Yvette Yeager, the Associated Press reported.
The city received a $70,000 check in January. Last year, Yeager pleaded guilty to embezzling $85,155 from the golf course during her tenure, which ended in 2012 with her resignation. The state auditor’s office issued a demand letter last year for $115,892, which included interest and investigative costs, the AP reported.
“The council voted to give that money back to us so we decided to put it into the golf course,” current Greenville Parks and Recreation director Corey Holmes told the Delta Democrat-Times.
Some of the restored funds will go toward upgrading the course’s sprinkler system, the AP reported.
“One of the complaints we keep getting is that the golf course is super dry,” Holmes said. “The control panel is going to be in the main office, and everything is going to be completely computerized. There’s going to be a timer we can set for the sprinklers to come on and off, and there is also a phone app that can now (be used to) control that as well.”
A new golf course restroom will also be added, the AP reported.
“We’re putting an extra bathroom in because there’s only one at the front of the course,” Holmes said. “When you’re playing an 18-hole game, you don’t want to have to ride or walk all the way up to the front of the course in the middle or the end of your game because you have to use the restroom.”
