The members-only offering at the White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., property will open in summer 2018, featuring holes ranging from 76 to 112 yards. The course, named The Ashford, will be walking only, and each green complex is inspired by famous designs from around the world.
The Greenbrier’s private Sporting Club is adding a par-3 course to their members-only offering in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., Golf News Net reported.
The nine-hole par-3 course, which will open in summer 2018, features holes ranging in length from 76 to 112 yards. All of the green complexes are inspired by famous designs from around the world, including a take on North Berwick’s Redan, a pair of double greens, the Papa from Myopia Hunt, the Duel Hole at San Francisco Golf and Country Club, a reverse Redan and a plateau-style surface, Golf News Net reported.
The course, named The Ashford, will be walking-only, and it could be used for settling post-round wagers on the Sporting Club’s Snead Course, as well for night golf and other events, Golf News Net reported.
The name is a call back to when the resort was purchased by the US Army in 1942 and converted into a military hospital named for Army doctor Col. Bailey K. Ashford. More than 700 German prisoners of war maintained the grounds while more than 1,000 people were working to help the hospital operate. Before it closed in 1946, the hospital treated more than 25,000 patients, all who had access to the resort’s facilities, Golf News Net reported.
