In a move that was made possible after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law in May which banned sports gambling in most states, the White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. resort will provide retail, online and mobile sports wagering at its Casino Club, which is open only to resort guests and event participants, as well as golf and tennis members and members of the Greenbrier Sporting Club. Betting could begin in time for the upcoming football season.
Sports wagering may be operating at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia in time for the upcoming football season, in a move made possible after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law in May which banned sports gambling in most states.
Anticipating the decision, lawmakers earlier this year passed the West Virginia Sports Wagering Act, which permits sports betting at West Virginia’s four racetracks as well as at The Greenbrier Resort. The wagering will be regulated by the West Virginia Lottery Commission, which approved rules governing sports betting the week of June 18.
The Greenbrier then announced on June 26 that New York-based FanDuel will handle retail, online and mobile sports wagering for the resort in White Sulphur Springs.
Wagers can be made at The Casino Club, which is open only to resort guests and event participants, golf and tennis members and Greenbrier Sporting Club members.
The goal is to have the betting services in place by the start of the college and professional football seasons in the fall, the resort and FanDuel indicated.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this service to those guests who are interested,” said Dr. Jill Justice, president, The Greenbrier. “The Casino Club at The Greenbrier has been an attractive destination for our guests and members since its opening, and sports betting provides yet another element to the casino experience.”
Added FanDuel CEO Matt King: “As we work towards building out a top sports betting product for the upcoming NFL season, we look forward to bringing West Virginia residents, sports fans, and visitors to The Greenbrier the best interactive sports experience on the market.”
