The swine flu outbreak and resulting deaths in Mexico has caused the Nationwide Tour to postpone the Mexican Open.
Scheduled to be played May 21-24 at the El Bosque Golf Club in Leon, some 200 miles from Mexico City, the tournament will be moved to a date later in the year when there is no longer any danger of contacting the flu.
“A significant number of lives have been lost in Mexico, which is tragic. There are more important things for people to focus on at the moment,” Bill Calfee, President of the Nationwide Tour, told the Associated Press this week.
The Mexican Open, first played in 1944, is jointly sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour and the Mexican Golf Federation.
The Canadian Tour, which also co-sanctions tournaments in Mexico, has likewise postponed them because of the swine flu outbreak The San Luis Potosi Open, scheduled to be played this week, has been put off indefinitely, and the Yucatan Country Club Classic and the Iberostar Riviera Maya Open are to be rescheduled to dates later in the year.
