During the past few weeks, members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and affiliated chapters have participated in a grassroots campaign to respond to proposed federal disaster relief legislation that was moving quickly through Congress. The goal was to have golf facilities included in the legislation.
Unfortunately, disaster relief took an unexpected turn when Congress considered economic rescue legislation. As an incentive to passage, the Senate added its tax extender/disaster relief package to the measure. However, the Senate’s version of disaster relief excluded privately and commercially owned golf courses from receiving disaster relief. The House-passed version of disaster relief had included them.
Congress passed, and President Bush signed into law, economic rescue legislation Friday, October 3, that included a tax extender/disaster relief package that denies golf facilities access to federal disaster relief.
