A lifeguard was on duty but the young girl fell into the pool unnoticed during a season kick-off party at Ansley GC in Atlanta on May 2.
A 4-year-old girl died on May 2 in an accidental drowning at the Ansley Golf Club swimming pool in Atlanta, Ga., the Associated Press reported.
The club said in a statement that the drowning happened on the evening of May 2. The girl was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner as Elliott Githens of Atlanta, the AP reported.
WXIA-TV reported that the drowning took place during a party to kick off the pool season at the golf club. A lifeguard was on duty, but the girl fell into the pool unnoticed, according to WXIA.
“At this time, we ask for your thoughts and prayers for the family members and friends,” said club President Andy Feinour.
“One of the great things about Ansley is our ability to rally around and support one another in difficult times,” Feinour added. “This spirit was evident last night in the members and staff that assisted on the pool deck and in the many that spontaneously gathered in prayer.”
“May we continue to show our support for the family in the coming days.”
A prayer vigil was held for Githens on May 4 and a memorial service was held on May 6, the AP reported. The pool was not scheduled to reopen until May 9.
