A COOL-SEASON GRASS that grows best during the fall, winter, and spring, Kentucky blue prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. This species has a poor summer performance and when stressed by temperatures, lack of water, or poor soils, it can be susceptible to disease and weed invasion. It can also be slow to establish compared with other cool-season grasses. For a more disease-resistant turf that offers good color and year-round performance, Kentucky bluegrass is often mixed with perennial ryegrass.

• Possesses a relatively shallow root system, so has a high demand for water

• Loses color more quickly than other cool-season grasses in drought conditions
