After an Oklahoma City golfer found his unique set of golf clubs that were stolen from his garage for sale on Craigslist, he contacted police and participated in a sting to catch the thief.
Bud McClain, a golfer whose clubs were stolen from his garage, then posted for sale on Craigslist, worked with police to recover the unique set, by posing as a potential buyer, the Oklahoma City-based KOCO 5 News reported.
“My wife is a nurse and she works nights,” McClain said. “We think she may have left the garage door open.” McClain said a short while later his set of Ping golf clubs disappeared, KOCO reported.
“They meant a lot to me,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of money, so I get a club for every holiday—a birthday, or Christmas or Father’s Day.”
McClain said a few days after the clubs went missing a buddy called him, saying he found them on Craigslist being advertised for $700. That’s when his dad called police and together with the Oklahoma City Police Department, arranged an undercover sting, KOCO reported.
McClain and an undercover officer arranged to meet Weston Baldwin in an Arby’s parking lot. In the back of Weston’s truck were McClain’s golf clubs, bag and all, KOCO reported.
“I asked the guy a few questions,” said McClain, and then said to the undercover officer, ‘Yeah, I’d buy them,'” which was the secret code phrase to alert police that the items were his. That’s when McClain said the officer told him to get back, KOCO reported.
“There were so many cops there in just a matter of seconds. It was like a TV show, it really was,” he said.
Baldwin was arrested without incident and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail. In his car police found other stolen items reportedly missing from people in the metro. His bail has been set at $58,500. He’s facing charges of receiving and concealing stolen property, KOCO reported.
