Hurricane Hermine left animals throughout the Tampa Bay area trapped, and four manatees are stranded in a pond at the golf course at Plantation on Crystal River (Fla.), according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission count, the Tampa, Fla., WFLA-TV reported.
A culvert is blocking the group from getting to Kings Bay. The pond is 200 yards long and 50 yards way. There is plenty of fresh water, according to Discover Crystal River Florida officials. In addition, hydrilla, an invasive but nutritious aquatic species, is providing food for the animals, WFLA-TV reported.
Officials say the manatees are considered safe and will be moved in the coming days. FWC crews assessed the site on September 8 to determine a time to move the manatees. On September 7, they moved a mother manatee and her calf. Those two manatees were stranded in Citrus County, as well, WFLA-TV reported.
