The Watford City, N.D. property is set to unveil the first part of its course renovation with an event for donors and invited guests. Construction of the remaining six holes, along with a new practice facility, is currently scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019.
Fox Hills Golf Couse in Watford City, N.D. will reveal the first 12 new holes resulting from its golf course renovation on September 29th. Designed by Kevin Norby of Herfort Norby Golf Course Architects, with Landscapes Unlimited handling construction and course operations, the new layout will have a decidedly different feel.
The course will feature wide fairways and large greens set alongside Cherry Creek. Sand bunkers inspired by the links courses of Ireland and Great Britain have wood bulkheads to ensure visibility.
“My goal was to create a golf course that would provide an enjoyable experience for golfers of all abilities and, at the same time, be unique enough to attract golfers from outside the immediate area,” says course architect Kevin Norby. “We wanted to create a golf course that would look and feel like it was part of the native Western North Dakota landscape, with rolling hills and a distinct ‘links’ character.”
Construction of the 12 new holes at Fox Hills GC began in the spring of 2017 on land donated by the Steve Stenehjem Family. The construction of the remaining six holes, along with a new practice facility, is currently scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019.
“We’re excited to unveil the completed portion of the new Fox Hills Golf Course in Watford City,” Josh Norby, President of the Fox Hills GC Board. “The design is impressive, as the rolling hills were utilized to build a fun and unique course.
“With five tee boxes, the new course will be playable for golfers of all skill levels,” Norby continued. “This community project will provide an opportunity to involve the entire family in a fun and healthy activity, as well as attract a quality labor force to a quickly growing McKenzie County.”
Play on the new layout will commence on September 29th with an event for donors and invited guests, along with a reception to follow. The event will begin with a 4 p.m. shotgun start, followed by a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Beginning on Sunday, September 30th, the new holes will be open to the public for preview play. This “sneak peek” will continue over the first week of October (and possibly the second week), allowing anyone to test the new holes of golf. The guest rate including cart will be $40.
The new holes will close for the season Sunday, October 14th to allow the agronomic staff to prepare the course for the winter.
