Florida Club Reinvents Pickleball to Accommodate Residents

By C&RB Staff | April 8, 2024

Eagle Creek Golf & Country Club in Naples, Fla. converted a Har-Tru tennis court into two pickleball courts, initiating a one-year trial period to gauge member feedback and assess the sport’s long-term viability within the community. The club partnered with a paddle manufacturer to introduce a solution that addresses noise concerns.

Eagle Creek Golf & Country Club in Naples, Fla. introduced pickleball as a new amenity, revolutionizing the game to cater to its residents’ needs. Recognizing the surging popularity of pickleball and its potential to enhance the community’s recreational offerings, Eagle Creek sought to integrate the sport despite space limitations.

This year, Eagle Creek, a boutique-style, fully built-out community, celebrates its 40th anniversary, while facing the challenge of finding real estate for traditional pickleball courts. Pickleball, known for its lively gameplay accompanied by the distinctive sound, required a thoughtful approach to ensure minimal disturbance to residents. In response, Eagle Creek has partnered with OWL Paddles to introduce a solution that addresses noise concerns.

OWL Paddles are the first to qualify for USA Pickleball’s new Quiet Category, reducing the noise of pickleball by more than 50%, allowing for a more harmonious playing experience within the community. With an estimated 36.5 million pickleball players nationwide and participation growing by an average of 158.6% over the last three years, Eagle Creek recognizes the importance of embracing this trend while respecting residents’ lifestyles.

More than half of the country club communities in Collier County, including many in Naples, have already incorporated pickleball into their amenities, underscoring its widespread appeal. To adapt to this trend, Eagle Creek is converting a Har-Tru tennis court into two pickleball courts, initiating a one-year trial period to gauge member feedback and assess the sport’s long-term viability within the community.

To oversee the court conversion, equipment procurement, and rule implementation, Eagle Creek has established a dedicated Pickleball Committee comprising enthusiastic members, including Len Gershun.

Gershun will be playing in the upcoming Minto US Open Pickleball tournament hosted in Naples, Florida on April 15 and 17. Drawing spectators from 29 countries around the world, this prestigious event further exemplifies the global appeal and excitement surrounding pickleball. Gershun’s expertise and passion for the sport will ensure a seamless transition and foster a vibrant pickleball community at Eagle Creek.

The trial period commenced April 7, marking the official opening of Eagle Creek’s two pickleball courts. Members and residents are invited to experience the pickleball under the guidance of Gershun and the Pickleball Committee, with opportunities for feedback and engagement throughout the trial.
