Poor drainage and heavy rains from Tropical Storm Fay combined to create unusually large water hazards at the Country Club of Orange Park (Fla.) golf course, where deer were seen wading in water up to their necks.
According to a report in MyClaySun, with four of the course’s holes “devastated,” the club had estimated losses of at least $100,000 in lost revenue and turf damage, reports Charles Raulerson Jr., General Manager and Director of Golf.
Raulerson directed his ire not at Fay but at the Clay County government, which he said has failed for years to address an inadequate storm-water holding system.
County officials have been studying the area drainage system and a fix is planned. About $2.8 million was in the 2007-08 county budget for design and permitting of a new pipe and retention pond system in the Loch Rane area, followed by $1.6 million in the tentative 2008-09 budget. The project is currently in the permitting stage, which is expected to be complete by November, with work under way in February, County Engineer Chuck Iley told the Sun.
