The cause of the fire at the Melfa, Va., facility is under investigation. Nine fire companies responded to the blaze, and fought it using water from the club’s nearby swimming pool and a pond.
A fire that broke out late December 22 at the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club in Melfa, Va., left the club’s main building with heavy damage, the Salisbury, Md., Delmarva Daily Times reported.
The fire started around 10:31 p.m., according to the Eastern Shore of Virginia 911 Center. The 125-acre country club is located on the bank of Pungoteague Creek, the Daily Times reported.
Firefighters from Melfa, Wachapreague, Painter, Onancock, Tasley, Community Fire Company in Exmore, Parksley, Bloxom and Northampton volunteer fire companies responded to the blaze. The first to arrive on the scene confirmed there were flames showing through the roof, the Daily Times reported.
Water to fight the huge blaze was shuttled at first from the Accomack County Industrial Park in Melfa, then water from the club’s nearby swimming pool and a pond also used to put out the fire, the Daily Times reported.
Employees who were working at the club at the time were alerted by the building’s fire alarm system. The workers saw smoke coming from ceiling vents and evacuated the building, the Daily Times reported.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Virginia State Police, the Daily Times reported.
