A fire erupted during a propane delivery and consumed two buildings at the club’s caddy camp, injuring the driver of the propane tanker truck.
A Tuesday morning fire at Sankaty Head Golf Club, Nantucket, Mass., destroyed three buildings that were part of the club’s caddie camp, reports Waggle Room.
There was one reported injury from the blaze, which firefighters put out after arriving on the scene at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
According to Nantucket’s Inquirer and Mirror, the fire began as a Yates Gas propane tanker was refilling the camp’s mess hall tank, but deputy fire chief Ed Maxwell said it was still unclear exactly how the blaze started.
Most of the 60 campers, who ranged in age from 13 to 22, were on the golf course when the fire started, and no one was inside the mess hall, according to Sankaty Head Golf Club General Manager Bob Kuratek. With the fire alarms activated, several campers quickly evacuated the other buildings in the immediate vicinity, and there were no other injuries reported. The blaze completely destroyed the mess hall as well as an adjacent dormitory, which housed 20 campers, Kuratek added. He estimated the damage at roughly $300,000.
The Sankaty Head Foundation runs the camp, which is situated between the 11th and 13th fairways of the links-style golf course.
