A large blaze heavily damaged the Killearn Country Club clubhouse early in the morning of Nov. 22, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. Renovation plans that were already in place are continuing to move forward at the club, according to its owner.
The Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) arrived at the scene around 1:35 a.m. The two-story building was veiled in heavy smoke and visible fire, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. Crews quickly quelled the flames.
No one was in the building at the time. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is heading the investigation of the blaze, which is standard protocol for TFD, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
“I was disappointed to wake up this morning to the news of the fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt and TFD took care of everything,” said David Cummings, the owner of the country club, to the Tallahassee Democrat. “We’re making great progress on the course renovations and hope to demolish the remaining parts of the clubhouse in January.”
The damage was isolated to the Oak View Room and side of the unpowered building, which was scheduled for demolition next month, according to a statement from country club representatives.
“We are looking at any additional procedures we can take to help ensure the safety and security of the construction site,” the statement read. “We will continue to reinforce the requirement that only authorized individuals are allowed on Killearn Country Club property during this construction period.”
The country club closed in early September for a projected 18 months while new facilities are built and others are renovated, like the property’s 18-hole golf course, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
A new clubhouse, pool, restaurant and luxury cottages are still slated to be completed in 2024.
