A developer recently withdrew his plan to put 400 homes and apartments on the 43-acre Hollywood, Fla., property after residents launched a grassroots effort to block any development. Mayor Peter Bober is proposing that voters should decide whether the city will buy the land to make it into a park.
A controversial proposal to develop the former Sunset Golf Course in Hollywood, Fla., has taken a new turn, as taxpayers may get the opportunity to buy the property and preserve it as green space, Miami-based Local 10 reported.
A developer recently withdrew his plan to put 400 homes and apartments on the property, after residents launched a grassroots effort to block any development, Local 10 reported.
Now, Mayor Peter Bober thinks voters should decide if the city can issue a general obligation bond to buy the land. “It could be a beautiful park,” Bober said. “We could use it for potentially field space, soccer fields, baseball fields. We have a lot of young families moving into Hollywood. So there’s a lot of possible uses that I think the residents might support, but they get to make the final say so.”
It’s still unclear how much the 43-acre site is worth. Bober wants the city manager to ask the property owner to give the city an option to buy the land, Local 10 reported.
A majority of city commissioners must agree before the city can put a bond issue on the November ballot, Local 10 reported.
