Ernie Els formally opened his first golf course in Hawaii earlier this year, adding in an article in Honolulu’s Pacific Business News that he’d like to see a world-class tournament played there within three or four years.
The 18-hole, 7,400-yard championship course built by the Ernie Els Design Group at Haseko’s Hoakalei Resort in Ewa Beach on Oahu will need to mature before it can host a world-class professional tournament, Els said. He added that he’d like to see a tournament played there when the course is “spot on.”
The opening of the course also marked the official opening of the Hoakalei Country Club, Oahu’s first private golf club in 30 years. The club will operate out of a temporary clubhouse between the ninth and 10th holes until a two-story clubhouse near a planned marina and commercial area is built. The club, which has ties to the private Plaza Club in downtown Honolulu, has approximately 50 members.
