Course superintendent Rocco Greco said about 30 percent of the course remained under up to 5 feet of water.
For the second time in five years, En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, N.Y., has sustained major flooding damage and has been closed indefinitely, reports Syracuse.com.
The Southern Tier was bombarded by nearly 10 inches of rain from remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, causing the Susquehanna River to overflow at record levels and cover nearly the entire course. The river loops around En-Joie’s southern border.
Course superintendent Rocco Greco said about 30 percent of the course remained under up to 5 feet of water Wednesday. That is down from peak flood conditions, when all but the ninth and 18th greens, practice green and elevated tee boxes were under water.
Greco and his grounds crew have been working long hours to clear the course of silt, which can smother turf, but have been hampered by all of the water that has yet to recede. He estimated 95 percent of the bunkers will have to be rebuilt and much of the course may have to be reseeded, but added: “It’s fixable. It’s just going to take time.”
Greco said no decision has been made on whether the course can reopen this fall, but surmised that it’s doubtful.
The last time the low-lying course was damaged so badly was in late June 2006. That year, En-Joie was unable to host the final B.C. Open, a mainstay on the PGA Tour from 1971-2005. It was moved to Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote Golf Club 11 days before the event’s July start.
