The resort in Ayrshire, Scotland will be renamed Trump Turnberry, and more than $170 million in renovations are planned.
Donald Trump plans to add his name to one of Scotland’s most famous golf courses after confirming that he has completed the purchase of Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, the Telegraph reported.
The famous links course and Open Championship venue will be renamed Trump Turnberry, with the American property tycoon promising to spend $170 million renovating the resort hotel that overlooks the golf course. Trump said he would outline plans for the site during a visit to Scotland in early July, the Telegraph reported.
“I am honored to own and manage this magnificent property, perhaps the most exciting property there is,” Trump said. “We will be spending a great deal of time, effort and money to make Trump Turnberry the finest.”
During a flying visit to Turnberry, and to his controversial course on the Aberdeenshire coast in May, Trump said he planned only to “tweak” the Ayrshire site, and would not make changes without the blessing of the R&A, the sport’s governing body in Europe. The hotel will be managed by the Trump Organization, the Telegraph reported.
A statement released by the organization said Turnberry had played host to four of the greatest Open Championships of all time, including the 1977 “duel in the sun” when Tom Watson defeated Jack Nicklaus, the Telegraph reported.
“Following completion of the sale of Turnberry Resort to Donald J. Trump, Starwood Hotels & Resorts can confirm that the hotel will continue to operate under The Luxury Collection brand as part of a long-term franchise agreement,” a representative of Starwood Hotels & Resort said. “Starwood will work closely with Mr Trump to ensure that the unique guest experiences and personalised service, for which the hotel is renowned, will continue to be offered to guests from around the world.”
Trump’s plans for a second golf course, a hotel and a clubhouse at the estate have been put on hold during a long-running dispute over plans to build 11 offshore wind turbines within sight of the course. His organization now owns at total of 17 golf resorts of its kind anywhere in the world, the Telegraph reported.
