Lester and Carla Newsome bought the Stanford, Ky., property on January 6, and are working on getting the golf course’s greens and bunkers in shape. The couple is looking to either lease the property’s restaurant, or convert it into an event center.
Lester and Carla Newsome purchased the Dix River Country Club in Stanford, Ky., on January 6 from previous owner Dan McQueen, the Danville, Ky.-based Central Kentucky News reported.
Lester Newsome, who has been employed by United Parcel Service for the last 16 years, said he has always had a love for golf and with retirement in mind, he and his wife, Carla, jumped at the opportunity to own their own golf course when the property was put up for sale, the News reported.
Lester says he plans on keeping his job with UPS for many more years, but he also plans to work at Dix River in all phases of the operation. He will work with the greens crew, mowing or working any area of the course that needs improvement. His main concern starting out is getting the “greens and bunkers” in tip-top shape. He will also help Carla with the pro shop when needed, the News reported.
The course, which was once a private golf club, is open to the public and the Newsomes say that a new highway sign will be installed within a couple weeks to welcome the public to come and play. While it is a public course, memberships are available for individual membership, weekday and family, the News reported.
Lester stated that they were hoping for someone to lease the restaurant in the next couple of months. If that option does not work, they do plan to turn it into an Event Center. There will be no pool available, the News reported.
The Newsomes are planning many events—holiday tournaments, possibly weekly scrambles, private group events, cookouts, and possibly clinics for ladies and youth, the News reported.
“We are excited and looking forward to meeting all our guests,” the Newsomes said. “We and the staff welcome new ideas. We do want to make people aware that we are open to the public, and we look forward to your visit.”
