The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) has been honored with one of the most prestigious awards in the state, the Michigan Quality Council’s 2008 Michigan Quality Leadership Award, the highest honor for organizational excellence in the state.. The award, modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, has never been presented to a hospitality organization in the state of Michigan.
“The Detroit Athletic Club has implemented a Performance Excellence Process as its framework for organizational improvement. It has developed a high-performance culture and an environment where the motivated workforce can create a premier experience for its members,” said Geri Markley, Executive Director of the Michigan Quality Council. “The DAC is a role model for other organizations in Michigan and for small businesses and other clubs.”
This great distinction comes after years of hard work and planning by the DAC, management team and staff, with the support of the DAC Board of Directors. The club applied for the award earlier this year and was selected for an extensive site visit by numerous examiners to verify its practices in seven performance categories: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; staff focus; process management; and organizational results.
“The Michigan Quality Council has recognized the DAC for excellence; something that members have known for almost a century,” said DAC President Mario Apruzzese. “The Detroit Athletic Club and its leaders are resolute in our desire to be the finest private club in the country. Our member-focused approach has kept this club financially sound with strong membership levels and high member satisfaction.”
DAC’s food and beverage program and its Executive Chef, Kevin Brennan, were featured in C&RB’s February 2009 issue (“The Cadillac of Club Cuisine”), and DAC’s Assistant General Manager, Craig Cutler, is the “Rising Star Award” recipient for the 2009 Excellence in Club Management Awards, co-sponsored by the McMahon Group and Club & Resort Business.
